"You’ll want to look out the left window," our driver said as we pulled up to Hazrat Nizamuddin station before sunrise. I was still half-asleep but the chai seller’s voice cut through the morning fog — that first cup tasted sweet and sharp at the same time, honestly woke me up better than my alarm. The superfast train really is quick; we’d barely settled in before fields started blurring past and someone handed us a breakfast box. I remember thinking how strange it felt to leave Delhi’s noise behind so suddenly.

In Agra, our guide Raj was waiting with a placard (my name spelled right, which never happens). He led us straight to the Taj Mahal just as the light turned soft gold — there’s no way photos can catch how the marble shifts color. Raj told stories about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz that made it feel less like a monument and more like... well, something personal. There were crowds but somehow it didn’t matter. I tried tracing one of the carved flowers with my finger when no one was looking — cool stone under my hand, dust in the air. After that we walked over to Agra Fort; red sandstone everywhere, echoing footsteps in those huge halls. Raj pointed out where emperors watched sunsets over the Yamuna. It’s hard not to imagine their lives here.

Lunch at the Courtyard Marriott was a proper break — I probably ate too many gulab jamuns but who’s counting? We talked about cricket with one of the waiters (he rooted for Mumbai Indians; I pretended to know what that meant). Later we visited Itmad ud Daula — they call it the Baby Taj — quieter than I expected, with delicate marble screens you could almost see through if you squinted. The last stop was Mehtab Bagh on the riverbank; by then my feet hurt but seeing the Taj Mahal reflected in that slow-moving water felt worth every step. The sun was low and everything smelled faintly of grass and smoke from someone’s cooking fire nearby.

The ride back on the Gatimaan Express felt slower somehow, maybe because I kept replaying little moments from earlier: Raj laughing at my attempt to say “Yamuna” properly or that first glimpse of white marble through morning haze. It’s funny how a place you’ve seen in a thousand photos can still surprise you when you’re actually there.
