Watch the Chinese fishing nets work, then move through centuries of colonial architecture in a single morning.

A private tuk-tuk tour of Fort Kochi covers the town's main landmarks — the Chinese fishing nets, Mattancherry Palace, Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica and Paradesi Synagogue — in a half-day loop with hotel pickup and drop-off. The guide speaks English and the vehicle includes bottled water. The route works for visitors who want a general overview without navigating the town on foot or arranging their own transport.

The Experience

The Chinese fishing nets are the first stop — large mechanical structures at least 10 meters high, operated by teams of fishermen using counterweights and ropes to lower and raise nets from the shore. They're fixed installations unique to Kochi, and watching them work gives you a sense of how the town has fished for centuries. From there the tuk-tuk moves through Fort Kochi's colonial quarters, passing the beach and the spice markets with their smell of cardamom and pepper that lingers from the trade routes.

The Cathedral Basilica of Santa Cruz is one of eight basilicas in India — built starting in 1505 on the feast day of the Holy Cross, it's undergone demolition and reconstruction over centuries and stands as one of the most impressive cathedrals in the country. Nearby, the Mattancherry Palace shows Keralan architecture layered with Portuguese and Dutch influence; it was built as a gift to a Kochi ruler in 1545 and later repaired by the Dutch, and its walls are covered in murals. The Paradesi Synagogue sits in Jew Town, constructed in 1568 on land donated by the Cochin ruler, and holds rare antiques collected over more than 1,500 years of Jewish settlement in Kerala.

The tuk-tuk picks you up and drops you back at your hotel in Fort Kochi or Mattancherry, and the driver handles the route while you move between stops. Bottled water is included. The half-day timing means you're back by early afternoon, leaving the rest of your day open.

Top questions

What are the Chinese fishing nets and how do they work?

The Chinese fishing nets, called Cheena Vala locally, are large mechanical structures at least 10 meters high fixed on the shore. Each one uses a cantilever net suspended over the sea with big stones hung from ropes as counterweights on the other end; teams of up to six fishermen operate each structure to lower and raise the nets — an unusual form of shore-operated fishing found mainly around Kochi.

Does the tour include entry to the Mattancherry Palace and Paradesi Synagogue?

The tour stops at both sites and your guide shows you the exteriors and grounds. Entry fees to the interiors are not included in the tour price and are paid separately if you choose to go inside.

How long is the half-day tour and when does it start?

The tour runs for two and a half hours. Your hotel pickup time depends on your location in Fort Kochi or Mattancherry and is arranged when you book.

Is the tuk-tuk air-conditioned?

The tuk-tuk is open-sided, which is typical for this vehicle type in Kochi. Bottled water is provided to keep you hydrated during the tour.

What makes the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica significant?

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica is one of only eight basilicas in India and one of the most impressive cathedrals in the country. It was founded on May 3, 1505, the feast day of the Invention of the Holy Cross, and has undergone extensive demolition and reconstruction throughout its history.

Can infants come on the tour?

Infants are welcome and must sit on an adult's lap during the tuk-tuk ride. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels.
