The Experience
I’ll admit, I was a little nervous about the whole tuk tuk thing at first — you know, weaving through traffic with no doors and all that. But our driver, Sabu, just grinned and said, “Relax! In Kochi, everyone knows where they’re going.” The engine buzzed under us as we zipped past the Chinese fishing nets. Those things look almost like giant skeletal hands reaching out over the water. There was this salty breeze off the Arabian Sea, mixed with something spicy — maybe cardamom? I still think about that smell.
Sabu seemed to know everyone on the street. He’d slow down to wave or shout something in Malayalam I couldn’t catch. At St. Francis Church he pointed out Vasco da Gama’s tombstone with a kind of pride — “He came here but didn’t leave,” he joked. The Dutch Cemetery was quiet except for crows hopping between the stones. I tried to read a name but my glasses fogged up (humidity: 1, me: 0). We passed the dhobi khanna where men slapped wet clothes against concrete; it sounded like applause echoing down the alley.
The best part? Jew Town and Paradesi Synagogue. The tiles inside are cool underfoot and every wall tells some story — Sabu explained bits of history while a shopkeeper handed me a tiny cup of chai (too sweet for me but I drank it anyway). The spice market is chaos in technicolor: turmeric yellow everywhere and pepper piled high. I bought some cinnamon sticks that made my backpack smell like Christmas for days after.
Lunch was simple Kerala food in a place Sabu picked — rice, fish curry, coconut chutney. No fancy presentation but honestly? It hit better than any restaurant meal we’d had so far. On the ride back through Fort Kochi’s narrow lanes, I caught myself grinning at nothing in particular — just happy to be there, sun on my face, bouncing along in that noisy little tuk tuk.
