The Experience

Fort Kochi's history sits in layers—Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, Jewish—and a private tuk-tuk lets you move between them without arranging transport or waiting for a group. The Chinese Fishing Nets at the waterfront are the visual anchor: enormous mechanical structures with nets suspended 20 meters across, operated by teams of fishermen using counterweights and pulleys in a method introduced by Chinese explorers in the 14th century. The nets dip and rise throughout the day, and the driver helps you position for photographs.

From there, the route moves inland to the Dutch Cemetery, consecrated in 1724 and now managed by the Church of South India—a quiet space holding the graves of European colonists who died far from home. St. Francis Church, built in 1503, is one of India's oldest European churches and the place where Vasco da Gama was originally buried before his remains were moved to Lisbon. The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, one of Kerala's eight basilicas, stands as one of the country's most impressive churches. Mattancherry Palace, also called the Dutch Palace, displays Kerala murals and royal artifacts and sits on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list. The Paradesi Synagogue, constructed in 1568, is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth and the center of Kochi's Jewish community.
