The Experience

The day starts with early-morning pickup from your Udaipur hotel for the drive to Narlai, a village that sits between Udaipur and Jodhpur at the base of a hillock crowned by an elephant statue. Once there, you'll walk through the village's maze of lanes, passing through the intricately carved Hindu and Jain temples—the temples of Adinath and Lord Shiva are the most prominent, their ceilings decorated with fine murals. The village itself dates back centuries and was once an important royal hunting reserve. After the walk, you'll have lunch at a nearby restaurant (not included in the tour price).

The jeep safari happens in the afternoon, when you'll head into the countryside around Narlai with an English-speaking guide and naturalist to search for leopards and panthers. You'll share the jeep with other travelers. The safari covers the landscape that made this area a hunting ground for royalty, and the guide will point out wildlife and explain what you're seeing. Afterward, you're driven back to your hotel in Udaipur's city center.

The full day runs about ten hours from pickup to drop-off. You'll receive two bottles of mineral water per person, and the vehicle is air-conditioned. A moderate amount of walking is involved during the village portion, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. The dress code for entering the temples requires knees and shoulders to be covered—no shorts or sleeveless tops. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat or scarf are recommended for the outdoor portions.
