The experience

We hopped off our cruise ship and there was Biju, already waving from his green tuk-tuk like he’d been waiting for us all week. The first thing I noticed was the mix of sea breeze and something spicy (cardamom maybe?) drifting in from somewhere nearby. We squeezed into the back (my knees still remember it), and Biju grinned, “Ready for real Kochi?” He meant it. Biju pointed out Mattancherry Palace too (I nearly missed it, the outside is so plain), but inside those murals are wild, full of color and stories about old kings I’d never heard of.

Somewhere along the way he pulled over for coconut water: chilled, sweet, cracked open right on the street while motorbikes zipped past honking. My hands were sticky after but I didn’t care. It tasted like a reward for just being here. We even stopped at Dhoby Khana where laundry workers slapped shirts on stone slabs. I tried lifting one of their heavy irons and gave up fast. Everyone laughed with me, not at me.

I still think about that moment when we turned a corner near Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica and suddenly everything went quiet except for church bells echoing over tiled roofs.
