The Experience

We hopped off our cruise ship and there was Biju, already waving from his green tuk-tuk like he’d been waiting for us all week. My hands were sticky after but I didn’t care; it tasted like a reward for just being here. We even stopped at Dhoby Khana where laundry workers slapped shirts on stone slabs—I tried lifting one of their heavy irons and gave up fast. Everyone laughed with me, not at me.

I still think about that moment when we turned a corner near Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica and suddenly everything went quiet except for church bells echoing over tiled roofs.
