What are the Chinese fishing nets in Fort Kochi and how do they work?

The Chinese fishing nets, called Cheena vala, are stationary lift nets: huge mechanical structures at least 10 meters high with horizontal nets spanning 20 meters or more. Teams of up to six fishermen operate them using counterweights made of large stones suspended from ropes, lowering and raising the nets to catch fish. They were introduced to Kochi by Chinese explorers in the 14th century and remain almost unique to this region in India.
