The experience
The tour starts early, when traffic is lightest and the city is still waking. You ride an e-rickshaw through Jaipur's grid of pink-painted streets (painted that color 300 years ago to welcome Queen Victoria) passing Raj Mandir Cinema Hall, the oldest movie theatre in the city, and the walled neighborhoods with their huge protective doorways from the Maharaja era. The slow pace lets you see the Jaipuri art painted on the walls and notice how the architecture shifts block by block. Your guide points out the stories behind each street and market as you move through them.
Ram Niwas Garden comes next, where traffic is banned in the morning hours so you can ride freely on the rush-free roads past the Anglo-Indian design of Albert Hall Museum. Then you reach the Hawa Mahal (the five-story honeycomb structure with 953 small latticed windows), and stop to photograph it. The lattice design once let royal women watch street life below without being seen. Now it's the icon of Jaipur. From Govind Dev Ji Temple, you get a far view of the City Palace and participate in the morning lamp aarti by your own hand, listening to devotees' folk songs. The flower and vegetable markets come next, with over 100 varieties on display, followed by the brass utensil makers' street, where you can try making one yourself to understand the craft.
Food stops are woven through the ride at famous outlets that have been running the same business for more than 100 years. You taste churned yogurt lassi, samosa, kachori, jalebi, and tea from a well-known Jaipur shop. Mineral water is provided as needed, and the ride includes first-aid boxes, paper napkins, and seasonal umbrellas. The whole experience takes three hours and ends with the energy you need to explore the pink city on your own.
