The Experience

The safari starts the moment you leave the city behind. Your driver picks you up from your hotel in Jaipur and heads straight for Jhalana State Park, a 2.5-hour wildlife reserve tucked into the edge of town where leopards hunt in the scrub and grassland. You're not walking through a zoo or a staged viewing area — this is actual habitat, and the animals don't perform on schedule. The jeep bounces over red dirt tracks, and your guide reads the landscape: fresh pug marks in the dust, the alarm call of a blue bull, the way the peacocks scatter when something large moves through the brush.

You can book a private gypsy jeep if you want the whole vehicle to yourself, or share one if you're traveling alone or with one other person and want to keep costs down. Either way, the off-roading is real — the park is designed for it, and the jeep tilts and lurches over terrain that would wreck a sedan. Spotted deer bolt across your path.
