Hunt for leopards across Rajasthan's only reserve built for them

Jhalana Panther Safari is a guided wildlife tour in Jaipur where you ride in an open 4WD jeep through India's first and only conservancy reserve dedicated to leopards, searching for panthers and over 20 other mammal species across 2.5 hours. The reserve holds 160 bird species, 16 reptile species and rare endangered trees; all permits, entry and still camera fees are included, and a naturalist guide travels with you. Hotel pickup is available for an extra fee; the tour operates year-round with seasonal clothing recommendations for cold winters, hot summers and occasional monsoon rains.

Step-by-step itinerary

Jhalana Panther Safari and Wildlife Viewing

  • Travel from city in open 4WD vehicle
  • Reach safari entry gate
  • Receive briefing from driver and naturalist
  • See leopards and other wildlife in the wild
  • Enjoy bird's eye view of the jungle
  • Return to hotel after safari

The Experience

You're dropped at the entry gate after pickup from your hotel, where the naturalist meets you and the open 4WD vehicle waits. The jeep has no roof or doors—you stand or sit exposed to the landscape, binoculars ready, scanning the scrub and grassland for movement. Leopards are the draw, but the reserve holds hyenas, desert foxes, monitor lizards, Hanuman langurs and blue bulls; the naturalist reads the terrain and the animal signs, stopping when something moves or when tracks suggest a cat passed through recently. Two and a half hours is enough to cover the main zones without rushing, though leopard sightings are never guaranteed—they're elusive, which is partly why they're here.

The Interpretation Centre sits near the entrance, and you visit it after the drive to understand what you saw (or what you might have missed). Jhalana is Rajasthan's first Project Leopard site, a reserve built specifically to protect and study panthers in an urban landscape; the centre explains the conservation work and the species that share the space. Still photography is included; video recording requires separate permission. The vehicle returns you to your hotel after the tour ends.

Operated by World Of Wilders

Is this one for you?The open jeep means you're exposed to sun, wind and dust for the full 2.5 hours, so dress for the season and bring water—this is active wildlife watching, not a climate-controlled drive. Book this one if you're willing to sit still and scan for movement rather than expect a guaranteed leopard encounter; the elusive cats are the whole point of the reserve, and patience is what the search demands.

Top questions

Can I book a hotel pickup for this safari tour in Jaipur?

Hotel pickup and drop-off are available for an additional $35, but only within 8 kilometers of the safari entry gate. If your hotel is farther, you'll need to arrange your own transport to the gate or pay the extra distance.

What wildlife can I actually see on the Jhalana Panther Safari?

Leopards are the main attraction, but the reserve is home to over 20 mammal species including hyenas, desert foxes, monitor lizards, Hanuman langurs and blue bulls, plus 160 bird species and 16 reptile species. Sightings depend on animal movement and season; leopards are elusive and not guaranteed.

How long does the Jhalana safari take and what's included?

The safari runs 2.5 hours in an open 4WD jeep with a naturalist guide, park entry, all permits and still camera fees included. You also visit the Interpretation Centre after the drive to learn about the reserve's leopard conservation work.

What should I wear for a safari in Jaipur during different seasons?

Winters (November to February) reach as low as 2 degrees Celsius, so bring warm clothing. Summers (April to June) are hot; wear hats and goggles for sun protection. Monsoon rains (July to August) are light but wear full-length clothes to avoid mosquitoes.

Is the Jhalana safari accessible for people with mobility concerns?

The tour is wheelchair accessible, though the open 4WD vehicle and unpaved terrain mean it's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or pregnant travelers. Public transportation options are available near the reserve if you prefer not to use the jeep.
