The experience

You meet your guide at the Jantar Mantar ticket counter to begin a walking route through central Jaipur that takes roughly two and a half hours. The guide starts with the astronomical instruments Raja Sawai Jai Singh II built to track celestial bodies, explaining how this UNESCO World Heritage Site functioned as an observatory centuries before modern telescopes. You won't enter the site itself, but the guide shares detailed images on an iPad so you understand what each instrument measured and why it mattered to Indian astronomy.

From there you walk to City Palace, where the guide describes the royal family's history and the architectural details visible from outside: the intricate craftsmanship and the blend of Mughal and Western design. You then move through the spiritual side of the city: the Govind Devji Temple, where you can watch the aarti ceremony if the timing aligns, and two other temples, Mandir Shri Ram Chandra Ji and Mandir Shree Laxminarayan Ji, each with their own stories about Hindu deities and local worship. The route takes you past Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds, where again the guide uses iPad images to explain the five-story facade and why it was built.

The walk also passes through four bazaars: Chandi Ki Taksal, a 17th-century market still active today; Johri Bazar, known for jewelry and Rajasthani handicrafts; Katla Purohit Ji Ka, a narrow historic street; and the route ends at Isarlat Sargasooli, a tower with city views. You're free to browse or buy in any of these markets, but the guide's focus is on the atmosphere and heritage, not commerce. A water bottle and written guide in English or Spanish are included.

  • access to iPad images at Jantar Mantar, City Palace and Hawa Mahal for detailed views of sites you explore from outside.
