The experience

The tour starts at Golconda Fort, 11 kilometers outside the city center: a mud fort built in 1143 and fortified over three centuries into one of India's greatest hill fortresses. Your guide walks you through how the Bahmani Sultans and the Qutb Shahi dynasty shaped the structure and the city itself. From there you move to the Qutub Shahi Tombs, where the arches, domes, minarets and galleries stand in Ibrahim Bagh gardens. Legend says criminals who took refuge here were pardoned by the kings.

Choumahalla Palace comes next: the residence of the Nizams, who were once the richest people in the world. The palace holds a water fountain, vintage cars, intricate carvings, glass chandeliers and a grand durbar hall. At its height, 7,000 attendants worked here. Your guide explains the personal and political life of the Nizams through the rooms and their contents. (On Fridays, Birla Mandir replaces this stop because Choumahalla closes.) The final stop is Charminar, built in 1591 by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shahi to mark the end of a plague. Your guide shares the legend of a secret tunnel beneath it that once connected to Golconda Fort as an escape route for the royal family.

The tour runs eight hours total and includes hotel pickup and drop-off in a private car, lunch (vegetarian available on request), and all taxes and fees. An English-speaking guide leads the entire day. If you need airport pickup instead of hotel pickup, that can be arranged for an extra charge.
