The experience

The day starts at Agra Railway Station or your hotel at 8am, with a stop at a 5-star hotel to freshen up before the tour begins. Your professional guide meets you there and stays with you through the three main sites. The Taj Mahal comes first: a 17th-century tomb built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his queen Mumtaz Mahal, and the one landmark most travelers come to Agra to see. A golf cart takes you to and from the entrance, and your guide narrates the history as you walk the grounds.

After the Taj Mahal, you move to Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site enclosed by 2.5 kilometers of red sandstone walls. Inside are the palaces Shah Jahan built (the Jahangir Palace and Khas Mahal among them) along with audience halls like the Diwan-i-Khas and two mosques. You'll tour these on foot with your guide. At 1pm you break for a buffet lunch at one of the city's better restaurants, then leave for Fatehpur Sikri at 2:30pm. This abandoned 16th-century city, also a UNESCO site, is sometimes called a ghost town because it was deserted after only fourteen years and has survived largely intact. You walk through it with your guide before heading to an Agra bazaar to shop for local handicrafts (marble inlay work, carpets, embroidery and leather goods) before your evening transfer back to the railway station or your hotel around 8pm.

All travel between sites is by air-conditioned private vehicle. Monument entrance fees, water throughout the day, and the golf cart ride at the Taj Mahal are included. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of several other languages. Let the operator know which you prefer when you book. Vegetarian lunch is available if you request it at the time of booking. The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, so plan accordingly.
