The Experience

“You have to see her before the world wakes up,” our driver Ramesh said as we sped out of Delhi while the city was still half-asleep. I wasn’t sure if he meant the Taj Mahal or something else, but by the time we reached Agra — just as the sky started turning that weird blue-grey — I got it. The air was cooler than I expected, and there was this faint smell of morning fires somewhere far off. Our guide, Priya, handed us shoe covers and grinned: “No crowds yet. Let’s take it slow.” And honestly, walking up to the Taj Mahal with barely anyone around felt almost private, like we’d stumbled onto a secret.

I’d read about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz in guidebooks, but hearing Priya talk about them right there — with birds darting across the marble and a couple of stray dogs napping in the garden — made it feel less like history and more like someone’s heartbreak you could almost touch.
