The experience

The tour starts at Qutub Minar, a 12th-century brick minaret and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mehrauli. From there you move through the monuments of New Delhi: Humayun's Tomb with its symmetrical gardens, India Gate (the 1921 war memorial with 13,300 names carved into its walls), a drive past Parliament House, and the Lotus Temple, a white lotus-shaped structure open to all faiths. If you book the full-day all-inclusive option, you cross into Old Delhi to see the Red Fort's red sandstone walls and Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque, built in 1656 with a red sandstone courtyard.

The market portion is a rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk, one of Delhi's oldest marketplaces. You wind through the narrow spice lanes at ground level instead of passing them by in a car. The half-day tours let you choose: either concentrate on the monuments of New Delhi in the morning, or spend the afternoon in Old Delhi and the market. A full-day tour strings all of it together. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of two other languages, and the driver handles navigation and parking.

The all-inclusive option covers monument entry tickets, so you're not buying them at each stop. Water is provided. If you're traveling with an infant, specialized seats are available.
