The experience
Start in Ajmer's old town, where the guide takes you through the lanes to Soni Ji Ki Nasiya, a 19th-century Jain temple decorated with more than a thousand kilos of gold. From there you move to Dargah Sharif, the white-marble tomb of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, which sits in the busy streets of central Ajmer and holds spiritual importance across faiths. The Akbari Fort Museum, housed in a 16th-century fort, holds historical sculptures, miniature paintings and artefacts from the region's past. You also see Ana Sagar Lake, built by King Arnoraja and later landscaped by Mughal emperors with gardens and pavilions.
After lunch, the tour moves to Pushkar. You walk the ghats surrounding Pushkar Lake: 52 of them in total, each built by kings and emperors and used for bathing, ceremonies and meditation. The Brahma Temple, the only one in the world dedicated to Lord Brahma, dates partly to the 14th century and stands out for its black and white marble and the silver turtle facing the sanctum. Varaha Temple, rebuilt in the 18th century after earlier destruction, shows 12th-century origins and intricate stonework. Rangji Temple, a 200-year-old structure with South Indian architecture, and Atmateshwar Temple, an underground 12th-century cave shrine to Lord Shiva carved from a single stone ceiling, round out the temple visits. The tour ends as evening aarti begins at the lake.
Private transport picks you up and carries you between all sites. The guide speaks English throughout and provides context on the religious and historical significance of each stop. The pace allows time to walk the lanes and ghats rather than rushing between points, though the day covers substantial ground.
