The Experience

We started weaving through Pushkar’s old streets just as the day was waking up — you could smell incense and something frying (pakoras maybe?) drifting out from a tiny doorway. Our guide, Raj, had this easy way of pointing things out without making it feel like a lecture. He paused by Pushkar Lake where the water was glassy and pilgrims were already dipping at the ghats. There was this quiet hum — bells, birds, someone chanting. I tried to take it all in but honestly got distracted by a cow nudging my backpack (she won).

The Pushkar walking tour really hit me at the Brahma Temple. It’s one of those places you read about but don’t expect to feel so… alive? Raj explained why it’s the only temple like it in the world — something about a curse and a love story that I half-remember now. Inside, people left marigolds and whispered prayers. I’m not religious but there was something grounding about standing on those cool stone floors while incense curled around us. We stopped for chai after — thick, sweet, served in little clay cups that warmed my hands.

Later we wandered past the Rangji temples (old and new — apparently there’s drama about which is which), and then up toward Savitri Temple on the hill. There’s a cable car if you’re feeling lazy or just want to see all of Pushkar spread out below you without sweating buckets. The view is wild — blue rooftops, desert stretching out forever. I still think about that light over the lake at sunset; it made everything look softer somehow.
