The experience

Your guide meets you at the Sólheimajökull parking lot and fits you with glacier equipment: helmet, harness, ice axe and crampons. After a short walk to the glacier, the guide teaches you how to move safely on ice and explains how Icelandic glaciers form and behave. Because you're hiking privately rather than in a group, the guide can take you to more remote sections of the glacier where fewer people venture.

The hike lasts around three and a half hours, and you set the pace throughout. Walking on the glacier itself (feeling the ice underfoot, using the ice axe, moving with the guide's instruction) is the core of the experience. The private format means no waiting for other groups and no compromise on where you go or how long you spend at each point on the ice.

What’s included

  • Glacier equipment including crampons, helmet, harness and ice axe.
  • expert guide instruction on safe glacier movement and Icelandic glacier formation.
  • private access to remote sections of the glacier away from larger groups.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and French.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24h before the start.

What glacier equipment do I wear on this hike?

Crampons attach to your boots for traction on ice; a helmet protects your head; a harness connects you to the guide for safety; and an ice axe helps you move across the glacier. The guide provides all of it and shows you how to use each piece.

How much walking is involved before we reach the glacier?

After gearing up at the parking lot, it's a short walk to the glacier itself. The guide keeps the approach brief so you spend most of the three and a half hours actually on the ice.

Can I do this hike if I've never been on a glacier before?

Yes. The guide teaches you how to walk safely on ice and explains glacier movement and formation as you go. The activity suits all fitness levels, and the private format means the guide adjusts instruction to your experience.

What's the difference between a private hike and a group glacier tour?

On a private hike, your guide can take you to more remote sections of Sólheimajökull where larger groups don't go, and you walk at your own rhythm without waiting for others. The guide focuses entirely on you and your pace.
