The experience
Crampons strap to your boots and a guide hands you an ice axe before you step onto the glacier itself. The hike starts on the surface, where you learn how the glacier moves and what climate change is doing to it. From there, the path splits: you can stay on top and take in the views, or you can go further. If you choose to, the guide will lower you into crevasses on a rope to see the ice formations hidden underneath, or teach you the basics of ice climbing so you can move up sections of the glacier under their watch. Families and groups with mixed abilities often split up this way, each person picking what suits them.
All the technical gear comes with the booking: crampons, helmet, harness, rope and ice axe. The guide speaks Spanish and leads the whole group, adjusting the pace and the depth of exploration to match what people want to do. The experience is built around the idea that there is no single right way to explore a glacier: staying on the surface is just as valid as going down into it. Bring waterproof jacket and pants, warm layers, a hat, gloves and sturdy hiking shoes. A day backpack helps you carry water and anything else you need.
