The experience
The hike starts at Icelandic Mountain Guides Base Camp, where your guide fits you with crampons, ice axe, harness and helmet and walks you through how to use each one. From there you step onto the glacier itself and begin crossing its surface (winding ridges, dramatic formations, deep crevasses), while the guide points out how the ice shifts and breaks, and what the landscape tells you about how glaciers work. The walk takes you across terrain that changes year to year as the glacier retreats and reforms.
The blue ice cave is the centerpiece. Carved by summer meltwater running through the glacier, it reveals striking shades of blue in its crystal walls and ceiling. You'll have time to explore inside, take photos and watch how the light moves through the ice while your guide explains how these caves form and why they look different each season. After the cave, you hike back across the glacier to Base Camp, where coffee and tea are waiting.
The 3.5-hour pace is steady but not rushed, and the guide stays with your group the whole time. Moderate fitness means you can handle the walking and the uneven ice underfoot. Children from 10 onward do this hike regularly. All gear is provided, so you bring only warm layers and a camera.
