The experience

The hike starts with a short walk to the glacier's front, where you'll gear up with crampons, helmet, harness and ice axe before stepping onto the ice. A certified guide leads you through the lower crevasse field and up onto the plateau, where the route shifts based on conditions and what your group wants to see that day. You'll spend roughly 1–1.5 hours on the ice, moving at a pace the guide sets for safety and comfort.

Sólheimajökull's landscape changes year to year as the glacier retreats, so the crevasse patterns, ice formations and views shift with each season. Your guide points out the features present on the day you're there (seracs, moulins, the texture of the ice itself), and explains how the glacier moves and changes. The plateau gives you a wider view of the surrounding terrain and the chance to see how far the glacier extends.

Because the tour is private, it's just your group and the guide, which means the experience stays focused on what interests you most. Photo stops happen naturally as you move across the ice. After descending, you'll head back to the parking lot, with the whole outing taking about 2.5 hours from start to finish.
