Float between continents in water so clear you see straight down

Snorkel the Silfra fissure in Thingvellir National Park near Reykjavik, floating between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates in water with over 100 meters of visibility. A live PADI instructor guide equips you with a heated drysuit and all snorkeling gear, briefs you on the geology and safety, then leads you through Silfra Hall, Cathedral and Lagoon over roughly 30 to 45 minutes in the water. The tour runs about two and a half hours total, includes hot chocolate and cookies afterward, and suits anyone 12 or older who swims comfortably; no diving certification is required.

The Experience

What makes Silfra different from any other snorkel site is the geology itself — you're floating in the gap between two continental plates that are slowly drifting apart. The water clarity hits 100 meters or more, so you see the rock formations, the fissure walls and the pale blue depths without any murk. Because the water stays cold year-round, you wear a heated drysuit over your own thermal layers, which keeps you warm and dry while you're in the water. Your guide is a PADI instructor who briefs you on what you're about to see, explains how the tectonic plates work, and walks you through the safety setup before you even enter the water.

The day starts with a 15-minute check-in at the meeting point at Silfra, where your group forms (maximum 6 people). You change in a heated van — the operator provides the drysuit, warm undersuit and all snorkeling equipment, and the guide helps you get it all on correctly. The briefing and gearing takes about an hour. Then it's a 5-minute walk to the water's edge and into the fissure itself. You'll snorkel through three sections: Silfra Hall, Silfra Cathedral and Silfra Lagoon, spending 30 to 45 minutes in the water. After you climb out, hot cocoa and cookies warm you up while you debrief with your guide and review any photos taken during the tour.

You need to be comfortable in water and able to swim, but you don't need any diving certification or special fitness beyond that. The minimum age is 12. Participants 60 or older need a doctor's approval form. Height and weight matter for drysuit fit — the operator will ask for your measurements after you book so they bring the right size (minimum 4'11" and 100 lbs; maximum 6'7" and 264 lbs). Silfra sits inside Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the famous Golden Circle route, so the landscape around the water is part of the day as well.

Top questions

Can I snorkel at Silfra if I've never dived before?

Yes. Snorkeling at Silfra requires no diving certification — only that you're comfortable in water and able to swim. Your guide is a PADI instructor who briefs you on everything before you enter, and the maximum group size is 6 people, so you get close attention.

What's the water temperature and how do I stay warm?

Silfra's water stays cold year-round. You wear a heated drysuit over your own thermal layers (long underwear and thick socks recommended), which keeps you dry and warm inside the suit while you snorkel. The operator provides the drysuit and undersuit, and helps you put it all on in a heated changing van.

How long do I actually spend snorkeling in the water?

Your snorkeling time in the fissure runs 30 to 45 minutes, moving through Silfra Hall, Cathedral and Lagoon. The full tour is about two and a half hours, with roughly an hour for check-in, gearing up and the safety briefing, then a 5-minute walk to the water.

What can I see underwater at Silfra?

The water has over 100 meters of visibility, so you see the rock formations and fissure walls clearly as you float between the two tectonic plates. The water is pale blue and the depth is visible all the way down — it's the clarity that makes Silfra unique.

Is there an age limit for this snorkeling tour?

The minimum age is 12 years old. Participants 60 or older need a signed doctor's approval form before they can participate. All participants must fill out a medical form before the tour.

Where do I meet the guide and how do I get to Silfra?

You meet the guide at the meeting point at Silfra itself, which is located inside Thingvellir National Park near Reykjavik. Public transportation options are available nearby; the operator will provide meeting details after you book.
