The Experience

“Don’t worry, you’ll get used to the drysuit — just wiggle in like a seal,” our guide Ása grinned as she handed me the suit by Silfra. I’d never put on so many layers just to get wet, but the Icelandic wind made it feel right. The air smelled sharp, almost metallic, and I kept staring at the water — that impossible blue. There were only five of us in the group, all shuffling awkwardly until Ása cracked a joke about Icelanders being born waterproof. That helped.

The first shock was how clear everything looked underwater. It’s not an exaggeration — you can actually see rocks twenty meters away, like floating in glass between two continents. I tried to touch both sides of the fissure but they’re further apart than you think. My lips went numb after a minute but honestly? It was worth it for those colors. When we got out, someone handed me hot chocolate and cookies (the kind with chocolate chips melting a bit from my hands). I could hear distant voices echoing off the lava fields while I warmed up.

After Silfra, we piled into the minibus and Ása drove us through Thingvellir’s mossy cracks and on to Geysir. The ground hissed and steamed; every few minutes Strokkur would shoot boiling water sky-high, making everyone jump or laugh. Gullfoss was next — louder than I imagined — spray hitting my face even from the path above. Last stop was Kerid crater, red earth circling a still blue lake. By then my socks were damp but nobody cared much; we’d all been through something cold and strange together. Reykjavík felt far away until suddenly it wasn’t.
