The Experience

Most people think snorkeling means warm tropical reefs. Then you show up to Silfra, near Reykjavik, in a wetsuit, and realize you're about to float between two continental plates in water so clear you can see 100 meters down. It sounds extreme until you're actually under, and the noise of the world just stops. Your guide meets you at the parking area and walks through the day — safety first, then into the water for 30 to 40 minutes in what feels like a different planet.

The water comes from a glacier 50 kilometers away. It melts, travels underground, and fills a massive crack in the ground where you're about to swim. Your guide is a PADI Divemaster or equivalent, which matters because they're not just keeping you safe — they're photographing you the whole time, and it's included. Most groups get between 40 and 100 photos depending on size and how comfortable everyone is moving around. They download after a few days. The wetsuit option is popular with scuba divers who don't have the certification for the drysuit dive, but it also lets you go deeper if you want to. If you're less confident in water, the drysuit snorkel is the easier route — either way, you're in Silfra.

After you climb out, there's hot chocolate waiting. Bring thick socks (seriously, your feet will thank you), a swimsuit, and a towel. You need to be between 150 and 200 centimeters tall, weigh between 50 and 120 kilograms, and be comfortable swimming — the activity isn't recommended for pregnant travelers or anyone with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.
