The experience

The tour starts at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where you meet your guide at the Arctic Adventures sign on the east side of the main parking lot. Arrive 15 minutes early. The area is busy and parking takes time. From there, you climb into a specially modified Super Jeep for a roughly 30-minute drive toward Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier. Once you leave the main road, the track becomes off-road and bumpy, offering views of mountains and the winter landscape as you head to the glacier's edge.

At Breiðamerkurjökull, your guide fits you with a helmet, crampons and headlamp, then gives a safety briefing. The walk to the ice cave is usually 15 minutes each way over uneven, icy ground: the crampons grip the ice and make it manageable. No prior glacier experience is required. The walk suits most people with sturdy hiking boots and a normal level of fitness. Once inside, you see how meltwater and frost have carved the ice from within. The colours shift from deep electric blue to white or grey depending on the season, snowfall and light on the day you visit.

Groups stay under 14 guests per guide, though you should expect to share the cave with other tour groups. The tour lasts about two and a half hours total. Ice caves are only accessible when conditions are safe, and the cave itself changes constantly: photos from other days may not match what you find. Wear layers and waterproof clothing. There are no washrooms at the ice cave, so use facilities at Jökulsárlón before you leave.

What’s included

  • Super Jeep transport from Jökulsárlón to the glacier.
  • helmet, headlamp and crampons for the ice cave walk.
  • expert English-speaking glacier guide.
  • safety briefing and all necessary gear fitting.
