Blue Ice Cave from Jökulsárlón: Winter glacier hike
Search for a cave that rewrites itself every season
A small-group glacier hike from Jökulsárlón into Vatnajokull National Park to locate and explore the blue ice cave, which forms naturally each winter in a different spot. The guide explains the ice mechanics as you walk. Crampons and helmets are provided, and a modified super jeep carries you to the glacier entrance. The cave's shape, size and position shift throughout the season as daily melt and nightly freeze reshape it, so no two visits are identical.

The Experience
You arrive at Jökulsárlón and board a specially modified super jeep for the drive onto Europe's largest glacier. A professional guide leads a small group, no more than fourteen, on foot in search of the blue ice cave. Because the cave forms naturally every winter and its location changes, the guide searches for it each season. You're not walking to a fixed landmark, but hunting for a phenomenon that exists only in these months and only where the ice has carved it.
Once inside the cave, you have time to explore the interior (the blue light, the walls, the scale of it), while the guide walks you through how it formed, why it's blue, and what the daily freeze-thaw cycle means for its survival. The cave's appearance shifts constantly: its shape, size and structure change as daytime melt softens the ice and night refreezes it. What you see this week will not be what someone sees next week. Crampons grip the glacier surface and a helmet protects you on the walk in and out.
The whole experience runs three hours from pickup to return. Children from age six are welcome. The tour operates in English, and all fees, taxes and the super jeep transfer are included in the price.

Is this one for you?The hike is three hours on glacier ice with a guide explaining the terrain as you walk, so you need to be comfortable on crampons and ready for a morning or afternoon of steady movement in cold conditions. If you want to see the blue ice cave but prefer a shorter or less physical outing, a glacier walk or a drive-by viewing from the jeep alone might suit you better.

What is the blue ice cave and why does it look different each season?
The blue ice cave forms naturally every winter inside Vatnajokull glacier as meltwater carves passages through the ice. Its appearance (shape, size, structure and position) changes constantly throughout the season because daytime melt softens the walls and ceilings, and night refreezes them, so the cave is never the same twice.
How do I get to the glacier if I'm staying near Jökulsárlón?
A specially modified super jeep picks you up and drives you onto the glacier surface to the cave entrance. The vehicle is built for glacier terrain, and the drive is included in the tour price.
What do I wear and what gear is provided?
Crampons and a helmet are provided and worn during the hike. Wear warm, waterproof layers and sturdy boots. Optional hiking or trekking shoes can be rented separately if you need them.
Is this tour safe for someone who has never hiked a glacier before?
Yes. The guide is professional and experienced, the group stays small, and the walk is designed for all fitness levels. Children from age six can join. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my tour?
If the road to Jökulsárlón is open and the tour is departing as scheduled, the tour runs. If you cannot reach Jökulsárlón due to weather, the operator is not obligated to reschedule or refund. You can claim from your travel insurance instead. No changes or cancellations are accepted within 24 hours of departure.
