Explore hidden crystal chambers on a remote hike from Jökulsárlón lagoon

This ice cave tour departs from Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon near Hofn and combines a super jeep ride across glacial terrain with a guided hike into a remote ice cave carved into Vatnajökull, Iceland's largest glacier. The tour includes professional guidance, crampons, helmet and ice axes if needed. You bring hiking boots, warm layers and a camera. The hike to the cave takes one to one-and-a-half hours over rocky moraine and onto the glacier itself, with smaller groups and more time than standard departures.

The Experience

You meet at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon at 10 a.m. and drive about thirty minutes by super jeep across the glacial landscape to the trailhead. The jeep ride itself crosses terrain most visitors never see: the raw, rocky moraine that glaciers leave behind as they retreat. From there, the hike to the ice cave takes one to one-and-a-half hours through uneven ground and onto the glacier itself, where your guide fits crampons to your boots and hands you a helmet before you enter the cave.

The ice cave itself is the reason for the day. The walls are a deep, intense blue (a color that exists nowhere else, created by the way glacial ice absorbs light), and the cave is carved into the glacier's interior, remote enough that few people ever reach it. Your English-speaking guide leads you through, and because this tour runs smaller groups than the standard departures, you have time to move slowly and stop for photographs without the pressure of a larger crowd behind you.

The tour operates daily from November through April, which is when the caves are stable and accessible. You'll need to bring your own hiking boots with ankle support, warm layers (fleece, wool, windproof and waterproof jacket and trousers), hat and gloves. Pack a water bottle and energy-rich food like chocolate. The operator warns that you should have at least moderate fitness (the terrain is uneven and the altitude gain is real), and the hike is not suitable for anyone with poor cardiovascular health or spinal injuries.

Is this one for you?The guide speaks English throughout, so you follow the commentary and the route without translation or confusion. This suits anyone arriving at Jökulsárlón for the first time or on a short window: the smaller group size and extra time mean you're not moving at the pace of a larger tour, which matters when you're navigating uneven glacial terrain and want to stop for photographs inside the cave.
