Golden Circle Tour: Snowmobiling Private Glacier Ride Reykjavik
Stand at tectonic plates, then ride a snowmobile across glacier ice
A private Golden Circle day tour from Reykjavik combines sightseeing at Þingvellir National Park, Kerið volcanic crater, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss waterfall with a shared one-hour snowmobile ride on Langjökull Glacier. Private transportation covers the Golden Circle stops; a shared glacier monster bus carries the group from Gullfoss to the snowmobile base. An English-speaking certified guide leads the route; snowmobile gear, helmet, and overshoes are provided.
Step-by-step itinerary
Golden Circle and Snowmobiling Adventure
- Visit Þingvellir National Park
- Explore Kerið volcanic crater
- See Geysir Geothermal Area
- View Gullfoss waterfall
- Snowmobile on Langjökull glacier
The Experience
Þingvellir National Park opens the day. You walk the Almannagjá gorge where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, stand at the Law Rock where Iceland's first parliament convened, and see the rift valley cut through the landscape. The private transportation means your guide sets the pace and chooses where to stop without waiting for a larger group to board and depart.
The route moves through Kerið volcanic crater — a caldera ringed in red soil with a blue lake at its center — then into the Geysir Geothermal Area, where the ground steams and Strokkur geyser shoots water into the air. Gullfoss waterfall comes next, a two-stage cascade into the Hvítá river gorge where the mist rises from the drop. After Gullfoss, a shared glacier monster bus carries everyone to the Langjökull base, where you put on the snow mono suit, gloves, overshoes, and helmet. The snowmobile ride covers the pristine white glacier for one hour, two people per machine.
The tour runs 11 hours total. Your guide speaks English and travels with the group throughout; the snowmobile portion is shared, so you ride with one other person. A valid driver's license is required to operate the snowmobile. Children as young as six can join, though only one child per adult is permitted on the machine. Warm clothes, good outdoor shoes, and sunglasses are recommended for the full day.

What is Þingvellir National Park and why does the tour start there?
Þingvellir is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, creating a visible rift valley. The site also hosted Iceland's first parliament at the Law Rock, making it both a geological and historical landmark that anchors the Golden Circle route.
Do I drive the snowmobile myself, or is it a guided ride?
You drive the snowmobile yourself on Langjökull Glacier for one hour. A valid driver's license is required, and you ride with one other person on the machine. Helmet, gloves, overshoes, and a snow mono suit are provided.
Is the whole tour private, or does the group size change?
Transportation for the Golden Circle stops is private, so your group travels alone to Þingvellir, Kerið, Geysir, and Gullfoss. The glacier monster bus from Gullfoss to the snowmobile base is shared with other groups, and the snowmobile ride itself is shared — two people per machine.
What happens at the Geysir Geothermal Area?
At Geysir, you walk among bubbling hot springs and geothermal vents. Strokkur geyser erupts regularly, shooting hot water high into the air — the display is part of the natural geothermal activity that defines the area.
What gear is included for the snowmobiling part?
Helmet, buff, overshoes, gloves, and a snow mono suit are provided. You should bring warm clothes, good outdoor shoes, and sunglasses for the full day outdoors.
Can children join this tour?
Children as young as six can participate. Only one child per adult is permitted on the snowmobile, and the child must be able to ride with an adult on the same machine.
