Snowmobile tour on Langjökull Glacier with ice cave from Gullfoss
Ride a snowmobile across Langjökull Glacier, then step into a naturally formed ice cave 70 meters deep
A four-hour snowmobile tour on Langjökull Glacier departing from Gullfoss takes you across Iceland's second-largest ice cap with a certified guide, then into a custom-built ice cave carved into the glacier's interior. You ride the snowmobile yourself (two riders per machine, or solo for an extra fee), wear full thermal gear and safety equipment, and stop for photos of icy plateaus and volcanic peaks. Children from age 6 can join if accompanied by an adult; a valid driver's license is required to operate the snowmobile.

The Experience
The day starts at Gullfoss Café, where the two-tiered Gullfoss Waterfall plunges 32 meters into a canyon behind you. After meeting your guide at the Mountaineers of Iceland sign in the parking lot, you board a specially modified Super Truck for a 35–60 minute ride into the Icelandic Highlands toward Geldingafell mountain. The truck navigates volcanic landscapes and snow-covered plains on an off-road route that is itself part of the adventure—a preview of the terrain ahead.
At the Langjökull base camp, you gear up in a snowsuit, helmet, gloves, balaclavas and shoe-covers, then receive a full safety briefing and snowmobile instruction. Once ready, you ride your snowmobile across the glacier for one hour, stopping for photos of icy plateaus and peaks depending on visibility and weather. The highlight is the ice cave—a naturally formed cavity recently made safely accessible with a custom-built entrance. You step inside to see blue crystal ice and formations shaped over centuries by glacial forces, then ride back to base camp and return through the highlands to Gullfoss.
Snowmobiles are shared by two riders, though you can arrange a single rider per machine for an additional fee. The tour runs four hours total and includes all thermal wear, helmets and certified glacier guide instruction. A valid driver's license is required to operate the snowmobile; children from age 6 are welcome if each is accompanied by one adult.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to ride a snowmobile yourself and explore a glacier interior—the one-hour ride and ice cave visit demand a valid driver's license and a comfort with operating the machine, which is what makes the full glacier experience possible in a single afternoon.
