The Experience

You start at the Husafell information center, where you'll be fitted with helmets, buffs, overshoes and warm overalls. A bus then takes you to the edge of the glacier. Once there, your guide walks you through how the snowmobile works and what to expect on the ice before you mount up and head toward the top. The ride itself takes about an hour, and your guide explains the landscape and the glacier as you go, stopping for photos along the way.

The snowmobiles are new and built for this terrain. You're riding on ice that shifts with the seasons, so the route and the conditions change — your guide knows what is safe on any given day and steers you through it. The whole experience, from gear fitting through the ride and back to Husafell, takes about 6 hours. An air-conditioned vehicle handles the transport to and from the glacier edge, which matters when you're already dressed in heavy layers.
