itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Lake Balaton and nearby towns

  • Stop at scenic Lake Balaton spot
  • Enjoy view of Lake Balaton
  • Visit Balatonfüred town and promenade
  • Walk streets of beautiful village
  • See Tihany Abbey and baroque church
  • Take ferry crossing Lake Balaton

"You know, people think of Budapest first," our driver Gabor said as we left the city, "but Hungarians come to Lake Balaton when they want to breathe." He had this way of tapping the steering wheel in time with his words. The early light was soft on the fields outside, and I remember thinking how different it felt—less polished than the city, more open. We stopped for a quick look at the lake itself, just ten minutes or so. The air smelled faintly sweet, maybe from all the spring flowers. There was a little breeze that made the water look restless.

Balatonfüred was next—a town that sort of sneaks up on you with its fancy villas and old mansions. Our guide pointed out a promenade where couples strolled arm in arm and kids chased pigeons. I tried lavender lemonade for the first time (honestly, not sure if I loved it or just liked saying I’d tried it). Li laughed when I butchered “levendulás limonádé”—she said even locals get tongue-tied sometimes. The streets were quiet except for church bells and an old man selling postcards who winked at us like he knew some secret about the place.

Tihany Abbey was something else—almost a thousand years old. We paid 8 euros each to step inside; I’m glad we did. The baroque interior was gold and shadows, with this hush that made me whisper without thinking about it. There’s an exhibition about the abbey’s history too (I didn’t catch every detail but the old photos stuck with me). Afterward, we wandered outside where you could smell lavender everywhere—chocolate, gelato, even beer if you’re brave enough. I still think about that view over Lake Balaton from up there; it just sort of stays with you.

The last part was crossing by ferry—nothing dramatic happened but there was something calming about watching families pile into their cars and locals chatting over coffee in paper cups. The ride back felt slower somehow; maybe because we’d seen so much in one day. If you want to start early or late, apparently you can just message them after booking and they’ll work it out.
