The Experience

Seven to ten hours takes you through three towns and across into Slovakia. The tour starts in Szentendre, where you walk the Baroque old town lined with galleries and artisan shops, then move to Visegrád Castle — a 13th-century citadel perched above the river with panoramic views of the Danube Bend. The castle involves a few minutes of stair climbing. After that, the Pilis Biosphere Reserve opens up: a national park within the region, marked by creeks, waterfalls and trout lakes. A cozy forest restaurant sits among the trees, where you can order freshly prepared trout caught from those lakes or game from the surrounding forests (the restaurant closes Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but other lunch options are nearby).

Esztergom Basilica dominates the skyline — Hungary's largest church, built on neoclassical lines with a dome visible for kilometers. From Esztergom, the route briefly crosses into Slovakia for the best views of the basilica and the old town across the river. The Marzipan Museum in Szentendre is optional: life-size sculptures of historical figures and celebrities carved from marzipan, with master confectioners working in front of you. The Treasury of Esztergom Basilica is also optional if you want to see the church's interior collections.

Because this is a private tour, timing and stops bend to what you want to see. You set the pace — linger in a gallery, skip a museum, spend longer at the castle or the biosphere reserve.
