The experience

I didn’t expect the Parliament building to look quite so… regal? We’d just turned the corner after crossing the Chain Bridge (windows down, that odd mix of river air and distant pastry smells drifting in), and there it was, all spires and stone, bigger than I’d pictured. Our guide, Ádám, had this way of telling stories that made me forget we were even on a tour. He pointed out bullet holes still visible from ’56 uprisings: his voice dropped a little when he said it. I caught myself staring at the Danube for too long while he talked, but I think that’s normal here.

The private car was a relief after our first day trying to navigate Budapest’s trams (still have no clue how those ticket machines work). Ádám knew every shortcut and somehow managed to time things so Heroes’ Square was nearly empty when we arrived. There was this hush. Just pigeons and our footsteps echoing off the stones. Later, at Fisherman’s Bastion, I tried to pronounce “Halászbástya” properly and Ádám just grinned and shook his head. The view over Pest from up there is something I still think about when I’m stuck in traffic back home.

We swung by St. Stephen’s Basilica (the bells were ringing for some reason, wedding maybe?) and then wound through Andrássy Avenue where locals sipped coffee outside old cafés. My partner wanted to see the Central Market Hall, so we squeezed that in too: heaps of paprika everywhere, colors so bright they almost hurt your eyes. The whole thing felt relaxed but full. Not rushed or scripted. Maybe it was the weather or maybe just Budapest itself, but even with all those landmarks packed into one day trip around Budapest by car, it never felt like a checklist.
