Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Eger and Thermal Bath
- Visit Eger Castle
- See the salt hill at Valley of Medicinal Waters
- Relax at Saliris Resort Medicinal and Wellness Spa
The experience
Eger Castle dominates the town's skyline and its history. Built in the 13th century, it's known for a 1552 siege when 2,000 defenders, including women and children, held off an Ottoman army of 150,000. The castle houses exhibitions that walk through that battle and the centuries after. Your guide leads you through the grounds and the town itself, where local wine boutiques sell Bull's Blood, the full-bodied red wine Eger has made for generations.
The thermal waters at Egerszalók are the day's centerpiece. The salt hill (1,200 square metres of white mineral deposits) rises from water that bubbles up from 410 metres below the surface at 65–68 degrees Celsius. Only Pamukkale in Turkey and Yellowstone in the US have comparable formations. You walk right next to it from the parking lot of the Nostalgia Baths, close enough to see how the mineral-rich water shapes it continuously. The Saliris Resort Medicinal and Wellness Spa pools sit directly facing the hill, so you bathe while looking at the thing you came to see. The water holds 30 trace minerals (calcium, sodium, magnesium and sulfur among them), and the pools are wheelchair accessible.
Private transportation picks you up from your hotel and returns you there at the end of the seven-hour day. The guide speaks English throughout.
