The Experience
The first thing that hit me stepping out of the van was the warm, salty air—Roatan’s kind of sticky but never too much. Our guide, Carlos, waved us over with a grin and pointed out a tiny craft stand tucked behind a row of hibiscus bushes. I grabbed a quick photo; the colors popped against the morning sky. We wandered through West End village next, where you can actually smell chocolate before you see the factory—sort of sweet and earthy at once. Inside, we watched as they poured glossy chocolate into molds. I didn’t know white chocolate started off looking so pale and soft until I saw it up close.
Carlos handed us samples—one dark, one white—and explained how locals use cacao for more than just sweets. A couple of kids ran by chasing each other with coconut husks while we listened. Then it was off to the rum & cake spot perched above the village. The view from up there is something else—you get this patchwork of rooftops and sea stretching out past the palms. We tried a few rums (the coconut one was my favorite) and nibbled on cake that tasted homemade. By midday, we reached West Bay Beach itself. The sand felt almost powdery underfoot and the water was so clear you could spot tiny fish darting around your ankles. There’s WiFi if you want to share photos right away, but honestly, I just wanted to soak it all in for a while.
