The Experience
I didn’t expect the drive from the Roatan cruise terminal to feel so… alive. Windows down, you get this mix of salt air and something sweet—maybe mango trees? Our driver, Carlos, pointed out a bright blue house on the way and laughed when I tried to say “buenos días” to a woman selling fruit. She smiled anyway. I’d booked the 2 scuba dives at West Bay mostly because it fit our tight cruise schedule, but by the time we reached the dive shop, I was already glad we’d left the ship behind for a few hours.
The team at West Bay Divers didn’t waste time—gear felt practically new (the integrated weights were a nice surprise), and our instructor, Ana, checked everyone’s certification cards like she actually cared. There was this nervous energy on the boat as we headed out; maybe it was just me. The water was clear enough that you could see shadows of coral before even rolling in. First dive was a wall—I lost track of how many angelfish drifted past. At one point Ana tapped her tank and pointed out a tiny crab wedged in brain coral. Never would’ve seen it myself.
Between dives, someone handed around pineapple slices—sticky sweet fingers and all—and we just floated there listening to reggae from another boat nearby. Second site was shallower but full of life; I caught myself grinning underwater when a turtle glided by like he owned the place. There’s something about surfacing after that second dive—sun on your face, salt drying on your skin—that makes you want to stay longer than you’re allowed. Even now, I remember that quiet moment before heading back to shore more than anything else.
