The Experience

I still remember how my hands shook a little the first morning. We’d just zipped up our wetsuits at the dock in San Pedro, sun barely up, and the air had that salty-wet smell that sticks to your skin. Our instructor, Carla, grinned at me and said, “You’ll forget about nerves once you see what’s down there.” Honestly? I didn’t believe her yet. The whole idea of breathing underwater felt like something out of a dream—or maybe a cartoon.

The PADI Open Water Diver course started with some online work before we even got to Belize (which was actually nice—I did it in pajamas back home). But nothing really prepared me for the first time I knelt on the sandy bottom, just off Ambergris Caye, feeling the gentle tug of the current and hearing only my own bubbles. Carla showed us how to clear our masks and check our gauges—she made it look easy, even when I fumbled with my straps. She laughed when I accidentally called a parrotfish a “rainbow fish”—I guess I was distracted by all those colors flashing past.

By day two, we were heading out for deeper dives—up to 18 meters, which sounded wild at first. There was this one moment: a huge turtle drifted by so close I could see its shell scratched from years on the reef. It blinked at me (I swear) before vanishing into blue. The water here is warm and clear enough that sometimes you forget you’re not flying. Between dives, we’d snack on fresh fruit on the boat while Carla told stories about growing up in Belize—her uncle apparently once found a conch pearl bigger than his thumb.

I won’t pretend every second was easy—my ears hated me for a bit—but by the last dive, floating above coral gardens with schools of tiny blue tang swirling everywhere, I felt this weird mix of pride and peace. Getting certified here means you can dive pretty much anywhere after, but honestly? It’s hard to imagine anywhere else feeling quite like this place. Sometimes I still hear those bubbles in my sleep.
