The Experience

“You ever held a sloth?” That’s how our guide, Carlos, started the day as we bumped along Roatan’s north side in his van. I didn’t really know what to expect from this combo tour — I’d seen photos of people grinning with sleepy-looking animals but it’s different when you’re actually there. The park was alive with sounds: macaws screeching somewhere above us, kids giggling nearby, and the air thick and green. When they handed me a sloth (her name was Luna), her fur was softer than I thought — kind of like moss after rain. She blinked at me so slowly it felt like time stopped for a second. I still think about that moment.

After the wildlife part (and a lot of monkey mischief — one tried to steal my sunglasses), Carlos drove us over to the Mayak chocolate factory. It smelled like roasted cacao before we even got out of the van. We tried bits of dark chocolate that melted almost instantly on my tongue — way richer than anything back home. Li laughed when I tried to say “gracias” in Spanish with my mouth full. There were locals selling crafts outside; I picked up a carved wooden turtle for my niece and probably overpaid but didn’t mind.

We had an optional stop at the Rum & Cake Factory too — tiny samples, sweet and boozy, not really my thing but my partner loved it. Then came West Bay Beach. That sand is powdery soft and the water’s so clear you can see your toes even when you’re knee-deep. Carlos found us chairs under some palms and just let us be for a while — free WiFi if you need it but honestly, I barely touched my phone except for photos. The whole day felt easygoing, no rush, just small moments strung together by good company and sea breeze.
