The experience
Tikal National Park covers 57,600 hectares of wetlands and forest and holds the most excavated Mayan archaeological site in Central America. The tour picks you up outside the border crossing at 8 a.m., then drives you into the park to arrive by 10 a.m. From there, a guide leads you through the site on foot, visiting the most impressive structures without the wait that builds at the main gate. You learn about Mayan history, Guatemalan culture, archaeology, and the region's flora and fauna as you walk.
At 2 p.m. the walking ends at the parking lot and you head to lunch at a restaurant near the park: no need to guess which one or navigate on your own. Drinks come with the meal. By 4 p.m. you're back at the Belize border to clear customs again. The van is air-conditioned, insured, and holds your group alone. The guide speaks English or Spanish depending on your preference.

What is Tikal National Park and why is it worth the day trip from Belize?
Tikal National Park is the most excavated Mayan archaeological site in Central America, with structures dating from 600 BC to 900 AD. It's the only natural and cultural UNESCO World Heritage site in Central America and is ranked among the top 20 tourist sites in the world. The park covers 57,600 hectares of wetlands and forest, so the scale and the number of major structures make it a full-day destination.
Do I need to arrange my own transport and border crossing?
No. The tour includes round-trip transport from the Belize border and handles both border crossings for you. A driver picks you up outside the border at 8 a.m. and returns you there by 4 p.m., so you don't arrange separate rides or navigate the crossings yourself.
Is lunch included, and what about drinks?
Yes. Lunch is at a restaurant near the park at 2 p.m., and drinks are included with the meal. You don't have to search for a place to eat or budget for that separately.
How long is the walking portion at Tikal, and is it difficult?
The tour walks the most impressive sites from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: four hours on foot through the park. The operator recommends at least a moderate level of physical fitness. It's not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. Infants can sit on an adult's lap, and specialized infant seats are available if you need one.
