The experience

The day starts with pickup at Quetzal Port and a drive inland toward the lake, climbing through highland coffee fields with two stops along the way: one for rest, one to walk among the plants and see how the landscape shifts with altitude. The route passes views of seven volcanoes that ring the lake. You arrive at San Lucas Toliman, a Mayan town on the shore, where Hotel Toliman sits on a deck overlooking the water. Lunch happens here, and the view across to the opposite peaks is the kind of thing people photograph for a long time.

From San Lucas, a boat carries you across the lake to San Antonio Palopo, an authentic Mayan town where the market still fills with vendors in traditional dress and small workshops where weavers work foot looms by hand. The sailing itself is part of the experience: the three volcanoes surrounding the lake create the landscape you move through. After time in San Antonio, the boat returns to San Lucas and the drive heads back to port.

A bilingual guide (English, Spanish, Italian or French) travels with you the whole day. The tour runs eight hours total. Purified water is included. Lunch is at the hotel, not packed in a vehicle. Transportation is wheelchair accessible, and the route suits all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to see authentic Mayan towns and markets rather than resort beaches, and if eight hours of driving, boat time and walking through villages suits your pace. The boat crossing is central to the day. It is not a quick shuttle but the route itself, so you experience the lake and the volcanoes from the water.
