The experience
Your guide meets you at Puerto Quetzal and you travel by air-conditioned vehicle toward Antigua City, crossing the Pacific Highlands countryside with views of the volcanoes. The drive gives the guide time to explain Guatemala's culture, history and the region itself: context that makes the colonial architecture you're about to see land harder. Antigua served as the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its preserved Spanish Baroque buildings and the ruins of colonial churches scattered through the city.
The tour centers on six stops. The Cathedral of Santiago, also called the Parish of San José, began construction in 1542 and was inaugurated in 1545, though earthquakes interrupted the work for decades. The current structure was completed in 1680. Central Park sits at the heart of the city as it has since Antigua's founding. It's where locals and tourists meet and watch the day move through the plaza. The Santa Catalina Arch, built in the 17th century on 5th Avenue North, originally let cloistered nuns cross between the convent and a school without stepping into the street. A clock was added in the 1830s. The Church of San Francisco dates to the 1570s and housed a college where theology, law, philosophy and mathematics were taught to colonial-era students. La Merced Church opened in 1767 with wider arches and columns built to withstand earthquakes. You also browse Jade Maya, where you can see and buy jade carved in the style the ancient Maya revered as their most precious possession: a tradition lost for over 400 years after the Spanish conquest and recovered only recently.
Bottled water is included and your driver is your guide throughout, handling the route and the stops. The tour runs 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic and the time of day. Cruise ship passengers must provide the ship name, docking time, disembarkation time and re-boarding time at booking so the tour can be timed to get you back to the port on schedule.

Is this one for you?At 5 to 6 hours round-trip from the port, this tour fits a cruise day with time to spare before re-boarding. The timing is built around ship schedules, not the other way around. If you're docked for only a few hours or want to explore Antigua at your own pace, a shorter excursion or a self-guided afternoon in the city would suit you better.
