The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the dust—fine and dry as we rolled out of San Juan La Laguna on our ATVs. Our guide, Luis, waved us on with a grin that said he’d done this a hundred times but still enjoyed it. The engine’s hum mixed with birdsong and the occasional shout from kids waving at us from doorways. We stopped above San Pedro for a lookout; I didn’t expect how quiet it felt up there. Just the lake below and volcanoes all around—almost too much to take in at once.

San Marcos was next, and honestly, I’d never heard of Cerro Tzankujil before this day trip around Lake Atitlán. But standing on those rocks with the water right there—clear enough to see your toes even if you’re chicken about jumping in (like me)—I got why people come here to swim. The sun was already high by then, bouncing off the lake so bright I had to squint. Someone nearby played guitar softly. It smelled like wet stone and sunscreen.

After drying off (sort of), we followed Luis to La Abeja Maya. He introduced us to Don Mateo who keeps native stingless bees—tiny things, almost shy compared to regular bees. I tried a bit of their honey; it’s tangier than what I’m used to back home. Li laughed when I tried to say “abeja” in Spanish—probably butchered it. There’s something calming about watching locals work with creatures so small most folks don’t even notice them.

We ended up at a little chocolate place in town—can’t remember the name but the smell hit me before we even got inside. They let us taste some while explaining how they roast cacao here by hand. My hands were still dusty from the ATV handlebars and somehow that made the chocolate taste even richer. I still think about that view from above San Pedro sometimes—how big everything felt for a minute there.
