The Experience

I didn’t expect the air up at Cerro San Cristóbal to smell so green — like wet leaves and wood smoke drifting from somewhere below. Our guide, Mario, grinned when I asked if it always felt this fresh. “Only after the rain,” he said, and pointed out the volcanoes peeking through the clouds. The city looked tiny from up there. I tried to take a photo but honestly, it didn’t really capture how wide everything felt.

We bumped along in our little ATV (I was nervous at first — not my usual thing), winding up to Cerro de la Cruz for that famous view over Antigua. There were families eating snacks on the steps and a couple of kids chasing each other around the cross. Mario told us about the history of the hill — something about pirates? I probably got that wrong, but he laughed when I tried to repeat it in Spanish. The whole day trip felt relaxed, like we had all the time in the world.

Hobbitenango was next — yes, it’s Hobbit-themed and yes, there are round doors and weird little sculptures everywhere. It’s touristy but fun (and honestly, the coffee there is strong enough to wake anyone up). Los Celajes had these giant wings you could pose with; I tried but ended up laughing too hard at my own awkwardness. The last stop was Altamira de Oriole. We sat down for a snack at their restaurant — fresh juice, something sweet and sticky I can’t pronounce — while golden light came through the trees. That’s probably what I’ll remember most: sitting there with tired legs and full lungs, not needing anything else.
