The Experience
You start at the office in central Antigua (6a avenida norte 60b) where you sign the contract, get your helmet, and learn the ATV before heading out. The first stop is Cerro de la Cruz—the city's famous lookout point—where you get a bird's-eye view of the colonial architecture, the valley below, and the volcanoes that ring Antigua. From there you ride back down and head up El Hato Mountain to the parking lot.
At El Hato you transfer into a 4x4 pickup truck that takes you higher into the mountains to Hobbitenango, a Lord of the Rings-themed eco-park built into the forest. This is where you spend the final stretch of the afternoon—walking the hillside, taking in views from the higher elevation, and trying the various activities scattered through the trees. Food and drinks are available to buy, and you stay through the sunset before heading back down the mountain in the dusk, passing El Hato again and stopping at El Tambor if you want a final drink or meal before returning to the office.
The tour runs in any weather, so bring a jacket or rain gear if the forecast looks uncertain. You need a valid driver's license to ride your own ATV; if you're coming as a passenger, someone in your group must book as a driver. Children from age 7 can join the tour. The guide speaks English and Spanish and rides with the group.
