The experience

The route starts in the foothills (orange trees, avocados, gardens), then climbs into the White Mountains on rough tracks that a standard car cannot take. Your driver-guide speaks English, German, or French (you choose at booking) and knows the terrain and the people who live there. A morning break in a village away from the main roads gives you time for free coffee or mountain tea before the real climb begins.

At 1,350 meters, you reach a "Mitato", a working shepherd's hut, where you learn how shepherds live and how they make the famed Cretan Graviera cheese. The altitude and the isolation mean you see eagles and wild goats that do not come down to the coast. On the way back, the view opens across the northern coast toward Chania, and you drop into Therisso village for a meal of Cretan food cooked by a family who has run the tavern for years, with local wine included. The return follows the Therisso Gorge back to town.

The Jeep holds up to eight adults, and the route is rough enough that the operator warns against it for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or cardiovascular concerns. Moderate fitness matters. Wear shoes that grip, bring sunscreen and a camera, and expect seven hours of driving and walking at altitude. Child seats are available if you request them when you book.

Is this one for you?Book the English or German departure if you want a guide who can explain the landscape and the shepherd's traditions in detail as you drive. The French option serves the same route with a French-speaking guide. The seven-hour commitment and rough terrain suit travelers with moderate fitness who are comfortable on mountain tracks. The altitude and the physical demands make it unsuitable for anyone with spinal, cardiovascular, or pregnancy concerns.
