The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the crunch of gravel under the Land Rover’s tires as we left Rethymno—windows down, warm air full of wild herbs. Our guide Manolis had this way of pointing out things you’d never spot alone. He slowed for a herd of goats blocking the road (they didn’t care at all), then told us how his grandmother used to walk through Prasses Gorge to sell cheese in town. I tried to picture that—her with a basket, these cliffs towering overhead. The light in there is strange and soft, almost green from the leaves above.

We stopped at Karines for coffee—strong enough to wake up anyone—and Manolis teased me for adding too much sugar. There were old men playing cards in the kafenio, barely glancing up except to nod. The drive twisted higher after that, past Potamon Lake where everything went quiet except for birds and the sound of wind in olive trees. It’s funny how you can feel both lost and completely safe at the same time out here.

By midday we reached Preveli Beach. I’d seen photos but nothing really prepares you for stepping onto that sand—the river running right into the sea, palms rustling, water cool even with the sun burning down. Some people waded up the river; I just lay back and listened to kids laughing somewhere behind me. Lunch was at a taverna in Spili—grilled vegetables, bread still warm from the oven, local wine poured without measuring. At one point Li tried to pronounce “dakos” properly and everyone burst out laughing (including me).

Kourtaliotiko Gorge was our last stop before heading back—the cliffs so close it felt like driving through a tunnel made by giants. Manolis pointed out griffon vultures circling high above; apparently they nest here every year. I kept thinking about that view over Rethymno as we drove back—the city small against all that wilderness. Sometimes I wonder if places like this change you a little bit, even if you don’t notice right away.
