The experience
The journey starts with hotel pickup from the Chania region and moves into an off-road route that cuts through northwestern Crete. You travel in a comfortable off-road vehicle with a private escort-driver, passing through Kissamos and following the Gramvousa Peninsula. The drive itself is the first half of the experience: panoramic views open up as the vehicle climbs and descends the terrain, and the landscape shifts from villages to coastal ridges.
At the Balos parking area, you begin a self-guided walk of 20–40 minutes down to the lagoon. There is no trekking escort for this part, so you set the pace and stop when you want. The walk ends at Balos Beach, where the water is shallow, clear and warm enough to swim. You have free time to wade in, float, lie on the sand or explore the coves: whatever suits the day. On the return drive, you gain height again and see Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa Island from above, a different angle on the same water.
The route includes an optional stop at a traditional Cretan taverna in Kalyviani village on the way back. Lunch is not included in the price, and choosing to eat there will trim your time at the beach. The whole experience is private: the vehicle, the driver and the timing are yours alone, with a minimum of 4 participants per booking.
