The Experience

The first thing I noticed was how the light bounced off the water near Red Beach—almost too bright to look at, but somehow inviting. Our guide, Nikos, handed us these dry bags (which I immediately overstuffed) and showed us how to hold the paddles without looking like total beginners. The sea was calm that morning, just a few fishing boats bobbing in the distance. I remember thinking my arms would give out after ten minutes, but it’s easier than it looks—especially once you get distracted by all those weird volcanic rocks along Akrotiri’s coastline. Nikos pointed out one cave where he said fishermen used to hide from storms. The echo inside made me laugh—I tried singing but mostly sounded like a confused seagull.

We stopped near Black Mountain for snorkeling. The water was colder than I expected—like sticking your face in a fridge—but so clear you could see every ripple of sand below. There were little fish darting around my toes and something about the silence underwater made me forget about everything else for a minute. When we got back in our kayaks, someone asked if we’d try cliff jumping at White Beach. Honestly? I hesitated (heights are not my thing), but ended up leaping anyway—mostly because everyone else did and it felt silly not to join in. My heart was pounding so hard when I hit the water that I forgot to close my mouth (salty mistake).

The picnic after was maybe my favorite part. We sat on towels under this jagged stretch of red cliffs, eating tomatoes that actually tasted like tomatoes (Nikos said they’re grown right here on Santorini). There was feta too, and bread that crumbled everywhere—I still have sand in my backpack from that lunch. Everyone looked sunburned and happy; even the quietest person in our group started telling stories by then. It’s funny how fast strangers become friends when you’ve shared saltwater and adrenaline together.
