The Experience

First thing I noticed — the white houses in Oia are even brighter than the photos. We’d barely stepped out of the van when our guide, Eleni, pointed down a little alley and said, “That’s where my grandmother used to buy her bread.” The air smelled faintly of sea and coffee. I kept losing track of time just staring at the blue domes and bougainvillea. Eleni knew exactly where to go for those views without bumping elbows with every other visitor (she actually waved at two shopkeepers on the way). I tried to say “kali mera” to one of them — he smiled but I probably butchered it.

We stopped next at Firostefani for that caldera view everyone talks about. The wind was up and you could hear church bells echoing over the cliffs, which felt sort of cinematic. Our group got quiet for a minute just looking out at the volcanic islets — someone whispered that it looked like another planet. After that we wandered through Megalochori. It was slower there; less polished maybe, but more real. There was a cat napping on a sun-warmed step and some old men arguing (in good spirits) outside a tiny café. The street sloped downhill so walking felt easy for once.

The last stop was Perivolos Black Beach. I didn’t expect black sand to feel so smooth underfoot — it gets hot though, so heads up if you’re barefoot. Some folks swam; I just sat with a cold drink watching kids chase each other by the waterline. Lunch was simple but fresh — grilled fish, tomatoes that tasted like sunshine. We had time to just be lazy before heading back. Honestly, I still think about that view from Oia sometimes when things get noisy at home.
