The experience

The dive station sits right on the beach at Caldera Beach in Akrotiri, so there's no boat ride or long commute. You walk from the sand into the water. Your instructor covers the basics on shore: how to breathe through the regulator, the hand signals you'll need underwater, and how to move in three dimensions. This briefing takes about 20 minutes, then you get into a wetsuit and equipment and walk straight into the shallows.

In waist-deep water, you bend down and take your first breaths underwater. Once that feels natural, your instructor leads you to a nearby reef where you'll spend around 35 minutes underwater, moving freely and watching the fish. The weightlessness is the thing people talk about afterward. You can move up, down, left and right without effort, which is nothing like moving on land. Total time in the water and on shore is about two hours.

The dive station provides water, coffee, tea and snacks after you surface. Note that after diving, it's not recommended to fly for 12 hours, so plan accordingly if you have a flight that day. Minimum age is 12, and the program suits all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for people with spinal injuries, cardiovascular conditions or if you're pregnant.
